According to the American Psychological Association, employees with low morale in the workplace are less engaged and suffer from increased rates of depression and heart disease. In addition, the Gallup Organization estimated that there are 22 million actively disengaged employees costing the economy as much as $350 billion dollars per year in lost productivity including absenteeism, illness and other low morale issues. On the other hand, employees with high morale are engaged, motivated and efficient. They willingly put in more hours and are more productive on the job.
Workplace engagement and productivity go hand in hand. According to Gallup, companies at the top quartile of engagement see 21% higher profitability. Compared to organizations at the lower quartile, their earnings-per-share growth is at least four times higher. Organizations at the top quartiles also tend to have higher productivity levels, fewer workplace injuries, and higher profitability. Simply stated, as author Shawn Achor writes, “happy people are better workers”.
